Vhf-band Sar for Forest Stem Volume Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
VHF-band SAR holds great promise for forest stem volume mapping. The paper describes a coherent scattering model and demonstrates that radar backscattering is mainly proportional to stem volume in coniferous forests. The model is also used to develop inverse methods. It is noted that a sloping ground may change the backscattering significantly and therefore needs compensation. Results of stem volume retrieval using the CARABAS-II SAR (20-90 MHz, HHpolarisation) are shown for several coniferous forests including both flat and topographic areas. The rms error is about 20% when compared with ground truth.

Estimation of forest parameters using CARABAS-II VHF SAR data
The use of airborne CARABAS-II VHF (20–90 MHz) SAR data for retrieval of forest parameters has been investigated. The investigation was performed at a test site located in the southwest of Sweden consisting mainly of Norway spruce forests. Regression models predicting forest parameters from radar backscattering amplitude were developed and evaluated. The results showed a linear relationship bet...
متن کاملRetrieval of forest stem volume using VHF SAR
The ability to retrieve forest stem volume using CARABAS (coherent all radio band sensing) SAR images (28–60 MHz) has been investigated. The test site is a deciduous mixed forest on the island of Öland in southern Sweden. The images have been radiometrically calibrated using an array of horizontal dipoles. The images exhibit a clear discrimination between the forest and open fields. The results...
متن کاملRetrieval of biomass in boreal forests from multitemporal ERS-1 and JERS-1 SAR images
The response of JERS-1 and ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to the forest stem volume (biomass) was investigated by employing a digital stem volume map and weather information. The stem volume map was produced from the National Forest Inventory sample plot data together with a LANDSAT thematic mapper (TM) image. A new indirect inversion method was developed and tested to estimate the forest...
متن کاملNew inversion approach for robust stem-volume retrieval from L-band SAR measurements with semi-empirical boreal forest model
This paper discusses stem volume retrieval based on inversion of SAR data, and proposes a new robust inversion approach. The method used employs model fitting with an inverted semi-empirical boreal forest SAR model, and takes advantage of the multitemporal aspect in order to improve the stability and accuracy of stem volume estimation. The approach is demonstrated using multitemporal dual-pol S...
متن کاملAssessment of stand-wise stem volume retrieval in boreal forest from JERS-1 L-band SAR backscatter
JERS-1 L-band SAR backscatter from test sites in Sweden, Finland and Siberia has been investigated to determine the accuracy level achievable in the boreal zone for stand-wise forest stem volume retrieval using a model-based approach. The extensive ground-data and SAR imagery datasets available allowed analysis of the backscatter temporal dynamics. In dense forests the backscatter primarily dep...
